In the fast paced world of today, food processors have become quite a popular kitchen appliance or rather a necessity for most home cooks. In case you are still unaware of this magical appliance, no need to worry because we are here to provide its complete overview and to answer the question: “What is a food processor?” in the best way possible.

To put it in a single sentence, it is a machine which slices, dices, chops and mixes ingredients for you to prepare your recipes with ease. The purpose of using a machine to perform these tasks which would otherwise be done by hand is to save your time and efforts spent in the kitchen. It’s hard to think of a recipe which you couldn’t make simpler by incorporating a food processor. You may use it for making beautiful salads, homemade soups, healthy baby food, professional piecrusts and much more.

The Parts of a Food Processor:

Food processors come in different designs and sizes but they all have the same basic components: motor, feed chute, bowl, lid and blade along with a couple of attachments. The weight of the motor helps keep the appliance stable and prevents it from moving when the food processor is running. The purpose of the motor is to rotate a vertical shaft which has cutting blades attached to it in order to puree or chop the ingredients.

The lid locks tightly over the processor bowl to prevent any leakage of ingredients from inside the bowl. The feed chute is present to allow you to add ingredients while the food processor is running.

Attachments that a Food Processor Offers:

Different models of food processors come with different sets of attachments to assist you in performing a variety of different food processing tasks. Some of the most common attachments are:

  1. Slicing and shredding disk:

Made from stainless steel, these disks are specially constructed to be mounted on the top of the container. When the ingredients are passed through the feed tube, they are sliced or shredded by the disk before falling into the bowl. Most disks offer three thickness levels while some offer even larger number of thickness levels.

  1. Chopping Blade:

Chopping blade, also called the multi-purpose blade is fixed at the base of the food processor bowl and allows you to puree, chop, grind or mix the ingredients. They are mostly constructed from stainless steel but you can find some food processors with plastic blades as well. Metal blades are a preferred choice due to their durability.

  1. Dough Blade:

Most good food processors include a dough blade made of metal or sometimes plastic. They have a less curved shape as that of the multi-purpose blade and are specially designed to knead pizza and bread dough.

  1. Spatula:

Although it may not seem an important attachment but it comes in handy when you want to scrape food from the sides of the food processor bowl for uniform processing.

  1. Citrus Juicer:

This dome-shaped accessory is present in most of the high-end food processor models. It is shaped in such a way as to fix on top of the food processor bowl to make juices of citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, grapefruits etc.
